An administrator needed to migrate 800 users from a legacy Postfix/Dovecot IMAP environment to Microsoft 365. However, over the years, they had relied on direct file-level access to their folders and had created a deeply nested folder structure. The client required the migration of all the mailboxes without losing a single bit of data, and while keeping the complex folder structure intact.
The client initially deployed a well-known SaaS migration product from a major industry competitor, but it failed completely. The tool either flattened the complex folder hierarchies into a single-level structure or ignored them entirely. Additionally, the migration jobs crashed frequently.
After conducting a technical analysis, our team at Kernel discovered that the migration failure originated from the incompatibility between the cloud-based SaaS migration tool and the deeply customized nature of the legacy Postfix/Dovecot environment. The users had created a deeply nested folder structure that the tool’s algorithms could not correctly process during the email migration. The tool that the client used initially lacked the advanced capabilities to parse these deep folder hierarchies. Furthermore, the client had minimal control over the migration due to the SaaS interface, and the tool failed to provide any useful information regarding the issue.
After multiple migration failures, the client installed Kernel Migration for IMAP tool. Unlike the previous SaaS product, our tool offers more granular control over the migration process, including log access, real-time migration monitoring, mailbox mapping, and several filters.
The client’s internal IT team tested our tool using the fully functional demo version and successfully migrated ten messages per folder.
However, while setting up the migration, the client had a minor confusion regarding Microsoft 365 tenant configuration. The issue was immediately resolved by our Kernel support team with a hands-on Zoom session.
After that, they successfully migrated all the mailboxes using our tool while retaining the original folder hierarchies and preserving data integrity.
Kernel Migration for IMAP executed the complete migration flawlessly. The software successfully transferred the legacy UNIX Postfix/Dovecot IMAP data to a Microsoft 365 account while perfectly maintaining the source's nested folder structure. All 800 mailboxes were migrated smoothly to the new destination without errors.
