Location: USAAdmin needed to migrate 800 users from a legacy Postfix/Dovecot IMAP environment to Microsoft 365. But over the years, they were using direct file-level access to their folders, and they had created highly complex and deeply nested folder structures that must be copied exactly without losing any information.
The client initially deployed a well-known SaaS migration product from a major industry competitor, but it failed completely. The tool either compressed the complex folder hierarchies into a single level or ignored them entirely. Additionally, the migration jobs crash frequently.
After our technical analysis, we discovered that the root cause of the migration failure originated from the incompatibility between the cloud-based SaaS migration tool and the deeply customized nature of the legacy Postfix/Dovecot environment. The users keep on making a very completed nested folder structure that the tool algorithms could not correctly process during the email migration. The tool that the client used initially lacked the advanced algorithms to parse these deep folder hierarchies. Furthermore, the client had minimal control over the migration due to the SaaS interface, and even the migration jobs frequently crashed without notice.
After failing migration multiple times, the client installed our IMAP migration tool. Unlike the previous SaaS product, our tool offers more granular control over migration, like log access, real-time migration flow, mailbox mapping, and several filters.
Led by Paul, the internal IT team tested our tool’s fully functional demo version and easily migrated ten messages per folder. Our tool handled the migration of all the mailboxes while keeping the exact folder hierarchies and maintaining data integrity.
However, Paul encountered a minor issue while configuring their Microsoft 365 tenant. But the issue was immediately resolved by our Kernel support team with a hands-on Zoom session.
Kernel Migration for IMAP executed the complete migration flawlessly. The software successfully transferred the legacy UNIX Postfix/Dovecot IMAP data to a Microsoft 365 account while perfectly retaining the original complex folder structures. The entire 800 mailboxes smoothly moved to the new destination, without job crashes.
