Many times we come across zipped files and folders owing to their large file size. In that case, we need to unzip the file for opening and accessing it. In Windows 7, when we try to unzip a file to the Program Files directory, we get all sorts of permission denied errors. Attempt to unzip the file becomes unsuccessful. So what is the other way around to open up the zipped file? As an administrator, how can we open up any file?

Well, you can perform a simple registry tweak that lets you specify the action to Run as Administrator for a file type. You will have to perform certain steps for manually adding Run as Administrator to any file type in Windows 7. Follow the steps given below:

  • Go to Start > Run.
  • Type “regedit” in the run box and then browse down to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip key, substituting .zip for the file extension that you are looking for.
  • Data value for the (Default) item tells you which application is registered to handle this file type, and also where we need to go in the registry next.
  • If the data value field says WinRAR.ZIP, then we need to browse down to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WinRAR.ZIP\shell\open\command registry key.
  • Go to shell > open > command section.
  • Right-click on command and then choose Export.
  • Now open up the exported registry file in Notepad and change open to “run as”.
  • Double-click on the file to enter the information into the registry. Now you will see that the “run as” section is identical to the open section.
  • Now you can right-click on a file and open it as an administrator.

Your job of adding Run as Administrator in Windows 7 is accomplished now. This process works for all zipped file types. For any type of data corruption in Windows 7 or Windows Vista, consider Kernel for Windows data recovery software.
