Where is my .PAB File?

Outlook stores your Personal Address Book information in a PAB file. There are times when you may need to copy the PAB file to a new computer or backup a PAB file. But nothing is possible till the time you are unable to locate and identify the PAB file your email profile is using. If you want to copy your PAB file to new computer or want to create a backup copy of it to deal with corruption issues, first of all find out the location of the PAB file.

To locate your personal address book file, follow these simple steps:

  • If you are running Windows Vista: Click Start.
  • If you are running Windows XP: Click Start, and then click Search.
  • If you are running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98: Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  • If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me): click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  • Type *.pab, and then press ENTER or click Find Now

All available .PAB files will get listed. But from the list, it is tough to identify the PAB file that your profile uses. To identify your PAB file, you will need start Outlook and follow these steps:

  • On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
  • Under Directory, click to Select View or change existing directories or Address books.
  • Click Next.
  • Click to Select Personal Address Book, and then click Change.
  • Note the path to your PAB file. For example, C:\Exchange\Mailbox.pab indicates a Personal Address Book named Mailbox.pab that is located on a Microsoft Exchange folder on your drive C.
  • Click OK, and then click Finish to close all dialog boxes.

This way you can find and identify the required PAB file.
