Using Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge Program
Microsoft Exchange Server comes with an apprehensive tool known as Exchange Mailbox Merge tool aka Exmerge.exe. Exmerege.exe tool is used when you want to merge currently working Exchange Server mailbox database to another system’s Exchange Server mailbox database. Moreover, a lot of time is saved throughout the merger process using Exmerge.exe tool.
What exactly Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge program does is that it extracts the desired data from source server into .PST files (Personal Storage file) and then merges this data into personal folders of mailboxes of the destination server. For running the Exmerge.exe utility, you must copy the Exmerge.exe and Exmerge.ini files from the CD to the ExchSrvr\Bin folder on the server’s hard drive and run the .exe file from that location. It is to be noted that one cannot use Exmerge.exe on front-end servers because front-end servers do not have a mailbox store. Also, you cannot use Exmerge.exe on a recovery storage group that is mounted on a front-end server.
Exmerge.exe is embedded with two modes of operation i.e. One Step mode and Two Step mode.
- In One Step mode, the program copies data from the source mailbox to a PST file and then merge the data in the PST file into the same mailbox on the destination server. In this case, the mailbox on the destination server must have the same mailbox name and the same container path.
- In Two Step mode, the user has the option of only copying data to PST files or merging data from PST files into a server. For this program to successfully work, the user must be logged on to Microsoft Windows NT with the Exchange Service account. If this is not possible, then the current Windows NT account must have permissions on all mailboxes selected to be merged.
Microsoft Outlook Client and the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program must be installed on the computer where Exmerge.exe is to be run. Now, double-click the Exmerge.exe program and you are ready to merge each and every Outlook email folders existing.
Exmerge.exe program has a unique feature that it creates a log file called C:\Exmerge.log, containing any errors encountered during operation. If you encounter any corruption or error in the Exchange database file, then you can resolve it using Kernel for Exchange Recovery software.
Exchange mailbox repair is made easy with Kernel for Exchange software. It repairs corrupt and inaccessible EDB databases and recovers exchange user mailboxes.
