If you have protected your outlook PST files with password and did not selected the Save this password in your password list check box, then MS Outlook will prompt the following window every time you launch the client:

You need to type correct password allocated to the PST file to access your outlook mailbox. In any event, if the password is incorrect, the email client will display the following error message:

“The password you have typed is incorrect. Retype the password”

ScanPST.exe is the free tool provided by Microsoft for users of MS Outlook. It comes with MS Outlook application or MS Office suite. It helps in repairing the damaged PST files and recover emails and folders of the user mailbox.

This tool is termed as inbox repair tool and useful in minor corruption cases of Personal Storage Files. Though being a free utility and user benefited, it has limitations where it do not repairs files with major file corruptions and if the PST file size has exceeded 2 GB. If you have PST file of MS Outlook 2002 and its file size has reached/exceeded 2GB then you should use PST Crop Tool to cut down the file size and then use the inbox repair tool for email recovery.

MS Outlook 2003 or MS Outlook 2002 PST files are referred as Microsoft Office Data Files. It becomes difficult to export items from outlook 2002 to outlook 2003.
Users who are now moving from MS Outlook 2002 towards MS Outlook 2003 and 2007 might face some problems to export the mailbox items. Microsoft Outlook 2002 and its earlier versions had their PST files were in the ANSI format (American National Standards Institute) with 2GB maximum file size.

With the release of Outlook 2003 and 2007 the standard format changed to Unicode format with 20 GB maximum file size to avoid file corruptions. With such advancements, older versions of the applications become non-compatible with newer versions and do not open the PST file of outlook 2000/2002 in outlook 2003 and outlook 2007. This result in error as – “Properties for this information service must be defined prior to use”.

” Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. Errors could have been detected in the file drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool.”
